Hope for the Homeland
Hope for the Homeland is a short hack and slash roguelite where every defeated boss brings you one step closer to the truth. Head into the wilderness to loot and defeat bosses. Use your loot to repair your village that was burned down.

The goal for this jam is to create a vertical slice of what a full game could be.
Bugs that I have ignored for the sake of getting a "polished MVP":
- Shift moves the player forward
- Loading the biomes usually occasionally gets hung up on the first try so you may need to restart your refresh your browser (you will need to replay the first 1 to 2 minutes of the tutorial). I'm also testing this out on a Chromebook so it may be a Chromebook specific issue. I think implementing a loading screen in the next jam may help with giving feedback.
- When talking to an NPC use the 'enter' key to advance. Pressing 'space' on the last line of dialogue will re-fire the event to start the conversation as there's no time padding between events
Controls
- arrows or WASD to move
- X or P to attack
- Z or O to dash
- space to interact with anything with an '!'
- esc to pause and use inventory
How to Play the Prototype
This plays best in full screen mode if you have a smaller screen. After the cut scene you are brought into the barracks. Follow the tutorial by attacking one of the dummies. The head to the back of the barracks and press "space" to enter the open portal door. Find the exit portal or the boss door. You do not need to defeat all the monsters to get back home. Collect any loot and defeat any monsters on your way to the portal back home. If you clear out the number of rooms x2 worth of monsters the boss door will open. Press "space" to open the portal to get back home or to open the Boss door. Click "Keep" on the Biome Cleared popup to return to the barracks. You can only keep what you can carry. You start with being able to carry 30 items and each time you upgrade the village you can carry more. You can drop things in your inventory by click 'esc' to pause, clicking the 'Inventory' button. Then select the number of items to drop and click the check to confirm that you want to drop the selected number of items.
Additions For the Production Jam
A boss fight will take place once the skull is above the biome door (clear the biome boss door twice). In addition upgrades can be earned by helping out Jabori the cook.
Additions from the Release Jam
Dialogue was added to the Chieftain to enhance the story. The burning down of the village was added to the opening cut scene. The village was refactored and visuals corresponding to what was unlocked were added. The correct explosion animation was added to the explosion effect. The correct attack was added to the spider. Tons of sound effects were added to make the world more immersive.
